9 - GLADIATOR'S ARENA
Description
Piazza d'Oro overlooked the panorama of the Valley of Tempe on its east side, and below was found an oval-shaped structure, traditionally considered as the Arena of the Gladiators
The oval shaped Gladiator's Arena
It is not open to the public and is only visible when it is cleared of vegetation.
Function and meaning
The name Gladiators' Arena is obviously fictitious and is not supported by any evidence; nothing is known about the excavations and discoveries.
Given its oval shape it could perhaps have been a water basin or a small auditorium; only an excavation could provide new information.
A building of a similar shape exists in Rome in the Villa dei Quintili on the Appian Way, but very little is known about both buildings, so it is not possible to make hypotheses or comparisons.
