THE SECRETS OF SOLSTICES AT VILLA ADRIANA AND IN THE PANTHEON

Discover the "special effects" of light created by Emperor Hadrian.

At Villa Adriana, at sunset on the summer Solstice (21 June) the sun enters through a special luminous conduit and creates a blade of light inside the dome of Roccabruna.
In the Accademia, the Sun illuminates the Temple of Apollo and goes through the whole building, as in Abu Simbel, both at the Winter Solstice (December 23) and in the Summer Solstice.
The illuminations the we we discovered had a very precise religious symbolic meaning linked to the goddess Isis, to the Seasons, to the dualism between Life and Death.
The emperor presided over special rituals and processions, being Pontifex Maximus and intermediary between men and gods.

In the Pantheon there are various illuminations at the Equinox, at the Solstices and in the Dies Natalis of Rome (April 21).
The most spectacular and important illuminations, the we discovered, are the Arc and the Square of Light, linked to the celebrations in honor of Diana, Apollo, Cybele and Jupiter Optimus Maximus.
The emperor could say that he was so powerful that he even commanded the course of the Sun; his absolute power was legitimized by the divinity itself.

Find out more about those secrets in our books:Villa Adriana. Architettura Celeste" (Italian language) and "Pantheon Architecture and Light" (English language)
